Report from Shiraz University and Shiraz University of Med. Sciences Reunion held in Shiraz (Aban, 1386), 2nd

December, 2007

Report of the meeting with Dr. Sadeghi, Shiraz University (SU) President

On Saturday November 3rd of 2007 we had a meeting in Dr. Sadeghi's office. Dr. Farideh Tehrani (board member of SUA) and Dr. Rashid Falah (university Vice President and director of SU International Affairs) were attending the meeting.

Dr. Sadeghi welcomed us and hoped for closer association between the University and the graduate. Dr. Tehrani asked Dr. Sadeghi what was his views and hopes on SU and USA relations. Noting that giving is not prevalent in Iranian society, he stated that the SUA could be a catalyst for the encouragement of members in that regard. I felt that his point was valid. He also mentioned the possibility of SUA second generation who are attending a university here in the West or those who are interested in learning Farsi could use SU during summers or even longer.

Regarding the exchange of Faculty members the possibility is even more and the needs are greater. Dr. Sadeghi emphasized the shortage of the faculty at the present which he feels it would get worse as time passes. His reason for this was that from limited pool of qualified candidates Universities in Tehran are more attractive because of environment and better pay. To remedy, his suggestion is to give a $200 per month scholarship to the good high school prospect who will be willing to agree to teach at the SU upon graduation. He is hoping for USA support on this.

With a mild joke I raised the question of social tolerance when a young Iranian studies in SU. I felt President reacted sharply and was concern about those who would want to "rock the boat". I replied that it would be unlikely that any person apply for the study and accept the cost just to be a trouble maker. Dr. Falah supported my point.

Over all, I felt the meeting was fruitful and Dr. Sadeghi really wanted to foster a better relation and communication with USA. I encourage the 8 member joint committee to pursue the subject.
