Dr. Mohammadreza Hojat, Ph.D., is a Research Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, and the Director of Jefferson Longitudinal Study at the Center for Research in Medical Education and Health Care. In addition to the development of the longitudinal database of medical students and graduates, he has pioneered new instruments measuring non-cognitive factors and student-well being in relation to academic and clinical performances, physician empathy, physician lifelong learning, and attitude toward physician-nurse collaboration. He has more than 20 years experience in educational and psychology research, and has published more than 150 articles in peer reviewed journals. He is the author of three books and nine book chapters and has given more than 60 presentations in national and international meetings. He has presented more than ten seminars as an individual speaker. He is a manuscript referee for several American and European professional journals, and has served as a guest editor for thematic issues of Journal of Social Behavior and Personality (on loneliness), Academic Medicine (on assessments in medical school and beyond), and Evaluation & the health professions (on changes in the health care system). Dr. Hojat is a licensed psychologist, and in addition to medical education, other areas of his research interest include physician empathy, interprofessional collaboration, psychosocial factors in academic and professional performances, mother-child attachment, psychodynamic study of loneliness, cross-cultural studies, and personality development and measurement. His research projects have been funded by a variety of granting agencies. Professor Hojat received his B.A. degree in Educational Psychology from Pahlavi (now Shiraz) University in 1971, followed by an M.A. degree in Psychology from Tehran University in 1975. In 1981 he received his Ph.D. degree in Psychology in Education from the University of Pennsylvania.
